Beale Street Caravan
December 1-December 9, 2009
Joe Bonamassa at Minglewood Hall in Memphis, Tennessee -- James Armstrong at the Pocono Blues Festival in Blakeslee, Pennsylvania -- Joe Bonamassa could play the blues before he could drive a car. By age 8 he was opening for B. B. King. At 14, he was invited to attend a Fender guitar event; during that trip to the West Coast he met Berry Oakley, Jr. Bonamassa and Berry founded the group Bloodline with Miles Davis's son Erin and Robby Krieger's son Waylon.
They released one album which produced two chart singles "Stone Cold Hearted", and "Dixie Peach." A little while later he stepped out on his own and has been a touring and recording artist ever since. Beale Street Caravan caught up with him at Minglewood Hall in Memphis, Tennessee in support of his latest recording project, The Ballad of John Henry. James Armstrong knows all about the blues. Following a critically acclaimed debut release on the HiTone label, a robber broke into his home and nearly stabbed the budding artist to death. It affected the speed of his guitar playing a little bit but his spirit remains unbowed. His soulful playing was evident at the 2009 Pocono Blues Festival. Robert Gordon / The Hi Record Story
