The Center for Southern Folklore welcomes back William Ferris, the Center's co-founder and currently Senior Associate Director of the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Mr. Ferris returns to Memphis to discuss his latest multimedia project Give My Poor Heart Ease and autograph the accompanying book. This event takes place in the Folklore Store Saturday evening, November 7 and admission is free. The Folklore Store is located at 123 S. Main Street @ the Peabody Place Trolley Stop in the heart of downtown Memphis.

With his book, CD and DVD, "Give My Poor Heart Ease: explores the musical roots of the blues, a journey that takes its author from churches and juke houses to farms and prisons as people from all walks of life share their stories, their beliefs and most of all, their music. Along the way, Mr. Ferris gives voice to a wide range of characters from little known housekeepers, clothiers, and disc jockeys to slightly known yet essential musical influences such as fife and drum performer Othar Turner and gospel singer Fannie Bell Chapman to blues music legends Willie Dixon and B.B. King. Performer or not, each and every person contributes stories and insights into the musical traditions that shaped the blues in significant ways.

It's been a long journey from his family farm in Vicksburg, MS to a distinguished career as one of America's most prominent folklorists. Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Ferris was the founding director of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi, where he taught for 18 years. He also taught at Yale University, Jackson State University and the University of North Carolina. He is a former chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, a co-editor of The Encyclopedia of Southern Culture and the author of Blues from the Delta. Bill Ferris' films include "Mississippi Blues" (1983), which was featured at the Cannes Film Festival. He has produced numerous sound recordings and hosted "Highway 61," a weekly blues program on Mississippi Public Radio for nearly a decade.
