The City Musick, a 5-person British ensemble, is coming to Memphis on thier first US tour, to play the music that filled the streets and public spaces of early modern Europe's most dynamic city. The London City Waits were the heart of community music-making. They played in the streets, in taverns, in halls, in theatres, and all sorts of other civic spaces. They played for festivals, processions, and ceremonies. Waits were wind players first and foremost and this concert shows the versatility of the wait as much in the instruments played (cornetts, sackbuts, dulcian, recorders, and bagpipes) as in the breadth of repertoire in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Some of the composers are well-known: Thomas Morley, John Dowland, Thomas Ravencroft, and Peter Phillips, for instance. But others are close to anonymous -- Clement Woodcock

-Robert Palmer and that old favorite Anon will be well represented.
