The Elephant Man

Dr. Frederick Treves uncovers the humanity of his patient, John Merrick in this play by Bernard Pomerance, directed by Leigh Ann Evans and presented by the McCoy Theatre at Rhodes College.

The show opens Friday, November 6 and also runs Saturday, November 7. Other performances are Thursday, November 12 through Sunday, November 15.

      Theatre-goers love a good freak show. From Phantom of the Opera to Beauty and the Beast to The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the story of the misunderstood oddity could almost be its own genre. Though The Elephant Man follows this tradition, it is not simply a rehashing of the story of the reclusive tortured protagonist and his true love. It is more of a tale of despair and self-loathing than its counterparts in the genre. This may be why there is yet to be a Disney rendition. In a bare-bones version of the play running at the McCoy Theatre there is little in the way of make-up and special effects, but it is not needed. The brilliant acting of Ed Porter as Merrick (the Elephant Man) --- contorting his body and face without the use of prosthetics makes the play believable and quite sad. The intimacy of the McCoy paired with the great performances of Rhodes' young actors make The Elephant Man a great experience. Collapse
