Hattiloo in the Park is a series of free performances that takes theatre beyond its traditional four walls and out to the community. Sponsored by First Tennessee Foundation, Tennessee Arts Commission, Federal Express, City of Memphis Parks Division, and Center City Commission, the free performances will take place each Saturday, noon - 3p.m ., from September 5 to October 24, in 8 Memphis parks that were selected to represent the entire city. In each community, Hattiloo Theatre will perform a seamless montage of dramatic vignettes that will include scenes from plays such as Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, August Wilson’s Fences, and God’s Trombones; presentations of African and Modern dance; and songs from musicals such as Don’t Bother Me I Can’t Cope. The 8 parks and their respective visit dates are as follows:
1. Douglass Park (1616 Ash – 9/05)
2. Hickory Hill Park (3910 Ridgeway Rd. – 9/12)
3. Frayser Park (2907 N. Watkins – 9/19)
4. Gaston Park (1046 S. Third – 9/26)
5. Hollywood Park (1560 N. Hollywood – 10/3)
6. Audubon Park (4145 Southern Ave. – 10/10)
7. Mud Island (10/17)
8. Levitt Shell (2080 Poplar – 10/24)
Hattiloo in the Park is designed to intrigue a broad range of interests, demonstrate the relevance of theatre, and stretch each audience-member’s familiarity with theatre. As a community theatre, producing affordable and, in this case, free plays, Hattiloo is some people’s first introduction to theatre. We honor this responsibility by producing excellent plays, in hopes of whetting each audience member’s appetite for other forms of performance art.
