12th annual Indie Memphis Film Festival
October 8-October 15, 2009
Add Review/Comment
Set for October 8-15, 2009, the 12th annual Indie Memphis Film Festival connects and inspires through the unique creative landscape that is the home of the Blues and the birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll, highlights regional filmmaking from all corners of the country and bringing new independent work to Memphis which otherwise wouldn't have an opportunity to screen in the area. The festival is headquartered at the Studio on the Square in the heart of the city's most unique and diverse district, and its cultural and creative core. It offers a relaxed atmosphere of intimate accessibility, allowing festival attendees to connect and converse with each other -- and with participating filmmakers.
Last year, former New York Times film critic & renown interviewer ELVIS MITCHELL (KCRW's "The Treatment" and Turner Classic Movies' "Under the Influence") joined the festival as part of the Features Jury and hosted conversations with filmmaker CRAIG BREWER ("Hustle & Flow") and actor GIANCARLO ESPOSITO ("Do The Right Thing"), who walked away with the inaugural Southern Soul of Independent Film award for his directorial debut, "Gospel Hill," which made its Regional Premiere at the festival. In 2007, indie filmmaking icon JOHN SAYLES opened the festival's 10th year with a special screening of "Honeydripper," with frequent collaborator ANGELA BASSETT in attendance. Other past attendees and special guests have included IRA SACHS ("Forty Shades of Blue"), PETER GILBERT ("Hoop Dreams"), JOEY LAUREN ADAMS ("Come Early Morning"), ALBERT MAYSLES ("Grey Gardens") and BOB MONDELLO (National Public Radio).
"I've had screenings of my films all around the world. I've watched my films premiere at the Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles, as well as the Prince's Palace in Marrakech. But there has never been an experience to equal my premiere at Indie Memphis."
~ CRAIG BREWER, "Hustle & Flow," on screening "The Poor & Hungry" in 2000
"Indie Memphis has so much that I look for in a film festival: programming with a thoughtful and idiosyncratic point of view that reflects its leadership, and reaches out to promising new filmmakers whose work has an unmistakable sense of place; an excited and eager community that attends the films in force looking to be surprised by the fare, rather than congratulated for coming out; and, oh yeah, barbecue."
~ ELVIS MITCHELL, former New York Times film critic / 2008 festival juror
