The Seafarer is a chilling new play about the sea, Ireland, and the power of myth. It's Christmas Eve, and Sharky has returned to Dublin to look after his irascible, aging brother who's recently gone blind. Old drinking buddies Ivan and Nicky are holed up at the house too, hoping to play some cards. But with the arrival of a stranger from the distant past, the stakes are raised ever higher.       Are you tired of those holly, jolly, starry-eyed, everything turns out right Christmas tales? Are you looking for something darker, more probing, with a bit of Irish wit thrown in? Circuit Playhouse has granted your Christmas wish. Come to Circuit Playhouse and and spend Christmas Eve in Dublin with a few neighborhood lushes and a mysterious stranger. This superbly written play by Conor McPherson, which reflects the moral narrative of the eighth century poem of the same name, debuted at the Booth Theatre in New York in 2007 and was nominated for four Tony Awards at the 2008 ceremony. One of the nominations was for best play and others for the stellar cast. Memphis has matched the stellar cast, directed by Bob Herrington, and they have given us insight into the characters gathered at the home of Richard Harkin and his younger brother Sharkey for the Irish tradition of raising the glass to celebrate the Season. The New York Times review describes it as the thinking-person's alternative to "It's a Wonderful Life" and as a flagon of Christmas cheer. It is certainly a surprising plot that unfolds and gives us a deeper interrogation into a Christian mythology, examining the plight of this life as it strives to survive the next. But this is the after-show narrative. The onstage narrative is lively, humorous and suspenseful. It is engaging from curtain up to curtain down. Ron Gephart, Michael Gravois, Jim Palmer, Joshua Quinn, and Tony Isbell are superb in their portrayal of the odd mixture gathered this Christmas Eve to partake of the free flowing booze afforded by the hosts and a card game with higher stakes than most would choose to consider. The set, oddly shared by "The Toymaker?s Apprentice," and the lighting shared by the same production work well enough for both. Direction, performance and design have all collaborated as a must see for those who applaud edgy, superbly written, inherently acted and intelligently directed theatre. Collapse
