Created and written by Gerard Alessandrini Directed by Jason Spitzer Anticipating a sellout in the TM/PM Summer Cabaret Series in July of 2009,  we're bringing back this sure hit of the long-running Off-Broadway musical revue. Broadway's greatest musical legends meet Broadway's greatest satirist in the truly funny, loving and endlessly entertaining tribute to some of the theatre's greatest stars and songwriters.

      On the playbill for Forbidden Broadway, you'll find a quote from the Today Show describing it as "the Saturday Night Live of Broadway." That alone should tell you whether this is your kind of show. Gerard Alessandrini's cabaret-style send-up mocks the pretensions and overblown sentimentality of Broadway productions old and new. Alessandrini has rewritten the lyrics to some famous numbers to transform them into commentary on the shows themselves. While the new lyrics are sometimes clever, subtlety is not the name of the game here -- Alessandrini's attacks are broad, slapsticky, and direct. There's a lot of talent on display during Theatre Memphis's production. The five cast members all prove themselves adept mimics as well as stellar performers in their own right, and each gets at least one show-stoppingly funny bit. Pianist Jason Bell deserves special mention for his marathon performance, which runs more or less continuously throughout the entire show. Director Jason Spitzer keeps the gags flying at a swift pace, so even when one falls flat, another is never far behind. Forbidden Broadway offers little for the uninitiated, so if you're unfamiliar with Les Miserables, Mandy Patinkin, and Wicked, you'll find yourself feeling left out of the joke. But if the thought of The Phantom of the Opera squaring off against Ethel Merman makes you chuckle, then this is the play for you. Collapse
