Written by Jeffrey Hatcher Directed by Jerre Dye A new play sure to delight Halloween audiences. From the author of Compleat Female Stage Beauty and Turn of the Screw comes a shocking version of Robert Louis Stevenson?s classic tale of depravity, lust, love and horror. In Victorian-era London, Henry Jekyll's exotic experiments have brought forth his other self , Edward Hyde, a sensual villain free to commit the sins Jekyll is too civilized to comprehend. When Hyde meets a woman who stirs his interest Jekyll fears for her life and decides to end his experiments. But Hyde has other ideas. The two sides battle to determine who shall be the master and who the slave.

      Jerre Dye wants to know what could be new about the classic Jekyll and Hyde tale, and he is wise to ask, because most of us think we already know that story. Jekyll is us on a regular day: we wake up, go to work, make nice with our family and friends and call it a day. Hyde is us when everything hits the fan: when we entertain fantasies about ripping out our boss' throat, beating our kids, and shooting the lousy driver in front of us. But Dye says the story is not just about good vs. evil, dark vs. light. It's about the struggle all humans go through trying to integrate the many facts and facets of themselves. And as a director he has integrated his new idea into the production of Jekyll and Hyde which opens this weekend at Theater Memphis. Through the play we can see how vulnerable we are to our own complexities. How we have a sense that simplifying, making patterns, and playing our days by social mores is healthy. Although simplification can be blissful, it can also be limiting. It was Lenny Bruce who commented on freedom of speech by saying, "The repression of a word is what gives it its power." Same holds true for the workings of our insides. Repressing parts of our make-up that seem out of the ordinary, or even dark, can give them enough power to destroy the rest of us. I would call Dr. Jekyll a hero, because I think attempting to embrace our many aspects is a heroic act. And the good doctor does it for love: his love of science and love of a woman. But this is not Dracula. Love does not conquer all. And the good doctor slips away from himself. Valiantly, at least. Collapse
