Music by Richard Rodgers, Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II Directed by Christina J. Moore Music Direction by Gary Beard One of the most beloved musicals of all time! A young nun-in-training proves too high-spirited for the religious life and she's dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity, captures the heart of the stern Captain. Their joy is disrupted when conscription in the Nazi armed services becomes imminent. The family's escape on the eve of World War II provides one of the most inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre.

ArtsMemphis Rants & Ravers Theatre Review by Dorothy Kirsch

THE SOUND OF MUSIC AT THEATRE MEMPHIS IS A WINNER!! YES, WE KNOW THE STORY AND YES, WE KNOW THE SONGS, HOWEVER THIS STELLAR PRODUCTION BRINGS THE SHOW'S MAGIC BACK TO THE STAGE AGAIN.

THIS HAS A LARGE AND ACCOMPLISHED CAST. EMILY CHATEAU AS MARIA IS A GEM, POSSESSING A LOVELY VOICE AND PROJECTING THE INNOCENCE AND NAIVETY OF THE YOUNG POSTULANT SENT TO MANAGE THE SEVEN VON TRAPP CHILDREN. AND WHAT CHILDREN!! THEY ARE AMAZING AND DELIGHTFUL. THE ELDEST LEISL (PLAYED BY CATHERINE NORTON THE NIGHT I SAW IT) IS MOST APPEALING. BARCLAY ROBERTS IS WELL CAST AS THE DISCIPLINARIAN, SOME WHAT STUFFY CAPTAIN, WHO IS RATHER AT A LOSS AS A WIDOWER RAISING CHILDREN. HE WILL MELLOW UNDER MARIA'S INFLUENCE. CHRISTINA WELLFORD SCOTT IS THE EPITOME OF THE SOPHISTICATED AND GLAMOROUS ELSA SCHRAEDER WHO HOPES TO MARRY THE CAPTAIN, ALTHOUGH SHE IS LESS THAN ENAMORED OF HIS OFFSPRING. AND IS THERE ANYTHING JOSEPH LACKIE CANNOT DO??!! AS MAX DEITWEILEER, HE IS THE OPPORTUNISTIC PROMOTER OF ENTERTAINMENT EVEN IF IT MEANS GETTING ALONG WITH THE NAZIS.

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO LIST ALL THE MEMORABLE PERFORMERS, BUT ONE NOT TO BE MISSED IS THE MOTHER ABBESS PLAYED BY CARRIE CORBETT WHO’S POWERFUL RENDITION OF “CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN” IS A STUNNING SHOW STOPPER.

TREMENDOUS EFFORT GOES INTO SUCH A PRODUCTION. THE SCENIC DESIGNER, CHRISTOPHER MCCOLLUM, HAS WORKED A MIRACLE. GREAT SETS (AND THERE ARE MANY) AND FLAWLESS SCENE CHANGINGS. ANDRÉ BRUCE WARD CONTINUES HIS SPLENDID COSTUMING TALENTS. INDEED THE GOWNS OF ELSA ARE PERFECT FOR THAT WORLDY LADY.

THE MUSICAL DIRECTION OF GARY BEARD AND HIS ORCHESTRA DO A WONDERFUL JOB AND NEVER OVERWHELM THE SINGERS.

HATS OFF TO DIRECTOR CHRISTINA MOORE AND CHOREOGRAPHER KATHY CARADINE!! WELL DONE!!

THIS IS A GREAT SHOW FOR THE FAMILY AND FOR EVERYONE WHO LOVES MUSIC AND THEATRE.

Emily Chateau as Maria was every bit as good as Julie Andrews in the movie version. Her voice was flawless and her facial expressions and acting were perfect. I should know...I was on the front row!... Expand
