Down By The Riverside is an unprecedented collaboration featuring vocal gospel legends The Blind Boys of Alabama and the ageless music of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Sharing the stage for the first time ever, these great cultural ambassadors bring together the joy of Gospel with the soul of New Orleans and promise an unforgettable evening for audiences everywhere.
Since 1939, the Blind Boys of Alabama have thrilled and inspired audiences worldwide with their fervent blend of traditional and contemporary gospel music. Jimmy Carter, one of its founding members, leads the group, which came together at Alabama’s Talladega Institute for the Blind. The ensemble’s most recent album Down in New Orleans, which features guest performances by Preservation Hall Jazz Band, legendary pianist Allen Toussaint and the Hot 8 Brass Band won a Grammy Award this year for Best Traditional Gospel Album. The Recording Academy also honored the Blind Boys of Alabama with The Lifetime Achievement Award. The Blind Boys of Alabama have also been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and awarded the NEA’s Heritage Fellowship for Lifetime Achievement as well as many other prestigious honors, earning them the true distinction of “living gospel legends.” The group has collaborated with artists ranging from Tom Petty to Prince, and appeared on such TV programs as The Tonight Show and 60 Minutes as well as in the film The Fighting Temptations. Preservation Hall Jazz Band takes its name from the venerable music hall located in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter. Its members, all born and raised in New Orleans, share a dedication to preserving and perpetuating the city’s jazz tradition. The band has toured the world since 1963, performing at top venues and entertaining such dignitaries as the King of Thailand and the British royal family. In 2006 the National Endowment for the Arts honored the band with the National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists and arts patrons by the federal government. The band recently released The Hurricane Seasons, a CD/DVD set chronicling the history of Preservation Hall.
