James "Super Chikan" Johnson is recognized worldwide as one of today's most entertaining and authentic Blues performers. He was nominated for a Best New Artist W.C. Handy Award in 1998 and has received five Living Blues Awards, an Excellence in Performance Governor's Award from Mexico City, and a Mississippi Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts. That's a long way to go with cluckin and pluckin'. Another Super Chikan trademark is his "chik-can-tars" - he crafts ornate, funky gas can and broomstick stringed instruments on which he paints scenes from the Delta. They are symbols of a life of making do with what he had in order to give voice to his talent, as authentic and original as the Blues itself, and they are highly sought after and prized as examples of folk art. He also plays the hell out of more conventional electric guitars. Here are just 3 voices from a virtually unanimous chorus of critical praise: Clarksdale, Mississippi's reigning bluesman's got plenty of entertainingly twisted sprit. And when he bites into a lick on one of his homemade guitars, like the weighty contraption he crafted from an industrial ceiling fan motor, he wails like Godzilla nipping on a high-tension wire. 40,000 volts of fun! The 10 Best New Roots Guitar CDs by Ted Drozdowski, Gibson.com "As original as the Southern folk art he creates, 'Super Chikan' today is the most authentic performer of real deal Delta blues. Growin' up near Clarksdale juke joints such as Red's or Margaret's Blue Diamond Lounge, Chikan has internalized the deepest music that hangs in the air every day. Art Tipaldi, Boston Blues "He is one of the most original and inventive of artists playing today. "He can play the feathers off of guitars. He makes good use of the 'wah-wah' pedal and he is one of the most entertaining acts you will ever see, and one hell of a guitar player to boot. A definite must to see if he is anywhere near your yard, both for his originality of playing and his fun filled show." Bob Gottlieb, Acoustic Music We will only add that a Super Chikan show in these parts is a guaranteed sellout. Get your tickets now, or don't come crying to us afterwards. For a concert preview, tune into WREC TV (Channel 3) to hear Super Chikan on Live@9 (in the a.m.) on Tuesday, March 24th! Tickets are $12, available at Otherlands and Davis-Kidd Booksellers.
