Bold, Cautious, True: Walt Whitman and American Art of the Civil War Era is a study of the poetics of American painting, sculpture, and graphic arts in the turbulent 1860s. This landmark exhibition features the work of some of the most important American artists of the mid-nineteenth century, including Winslow Homer, Eastman Johnson, Sanford Robinson Gifford, and John Frederick Kensett. Their works reveal changing ideas and attitudes, major shifts that Walt Whitman's poetry and prose anticipated and that the Civil War hurried into effect.
