Based on a folk tale, Wiley tells the story of a young boy who must conquer two terrible villains: the mysterious Hairy Man, and more importantly, his own fear. This production marks the GCT directing debut of Leslie Barker, a graduate directing student at the University of Memphis Department of Theatre and Dance. The cast includes Matt Barella, Joesph Shepard, Natalie Cooper, Morgan Baltz, Katie Daniel, Tuesday Wade, Leah Swann, Kendall Christian and William Durden.

Wiley and the Hairy Man is an All Children’s Theatre production (or, A.C.T.) - meaning that every actor on stage is under 18! GCT’s Education and Outreach program is dedicated to providing opportunities for performers of all ages!

    NOTES FROM DIRECTOR LESLIE BARKER

“Suzan Zeder's, Wiley and the Hairy Man, takes a traditional folk-tale and turns it into a creative and adventurous play for young people. The story is reminiscent of David and Goliath, because we see a young boy defeat his much bigger and much scarier nemesis. Wiley's victory not only stems out of determination and wit, but also the faith that he eventually discovers in himself. This unlikely battle of wits takes place in the deep south against the backdrop of the Tombigbee Swamp .

One of the most exciting elements of this play is the extremely tight ensemble work that it requires. Every character in the play must work together by creating interesting movement and sounds with their voices and bodies. Chorus members must become everything from quicksand to an alligator. Actors much look within themselves for creativity to create the magical world of this play, much like Wiley must look within himself to find the courage to defeat the Hairy Man.”
