After more than 22 live performances, and performing before combined audiences of more than 30,000, Umoja Kamaru makes a triumphant return for its ninth season of cultural reflection and jubilant celebration. Defined as “unity celebration” in the African language of Swahili, Umoja Kamaru uncovers a powerful message of unrelenting courage, faith and perseverance. This Broadway-like production takes audiences on a surreal, cultural journey from Africa to America. Having earned a reputation as the “ambassador of unity celebrations”, Umoja Kamaru has assembled a diverse group of audiences from all racial backgrounds. Synonymous with explosive beats and rhythms, this season’s Umoja Kamaru performances will include scores of original music, costumed dancers, breathtaking scenes and innovative stage and lighting treatments. In its embryonic stages, Umoja Kamaru consisted of only two dancers and two drummers. Now, this colossal production has developed into a cadre of more than 400 performers. A second generation performer from the Isaac Hayes Family, choreographer Howard PHeelgooD will return for his second season with the production. Mr. PHeelgooD has worked with celebrities such as Denzel Washington, Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle, Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight, Janet Jackson and Mary J. Blige, to name a few. Many churches, businesses, schools, colleges, and civic organizations have traveled from as far as Nashville, Little Rock and parts of Mississippi to witness the Mid-South’s most celebrated cultural production.
