New Ballet brings its eclectic blend of Ballet, Hip Hop and Flamenco back to the Buckman Performing Arts Center for the fifth annual production of Springloaded where young Memphis trained professionals and trainees will perform varied works bridging the great Martha Graham to the local dance phenomenon of Jookin'. Eight choreographers are represented in the production including Graham, Kevin Trent Thomas (formerly of Dance Theater of Harlem), Blakely White McQuire of the Martha Graham Company and notably, Barcelona native, and now Memphis choreographer, Noelia Garcia Carmona. Ms. Carmona's creation speaks to the commonalities of the Spanish and Southern cultures (this work made possible by ArtMemphis and the ABC grant). A guest appearance by the Jookin' Academy in "Three Kings" highlights a dance style that is capturing attention world-wide and is unique to inner city Memphis. Don't miss this soul stirring evening highlighting young Memphis talent hailing from varied cultural backgrounds.

    • ArtsMemphis logo

Known around the world for its blues and rock and roll, Memphis has a recognizable special vibe. ArtsMemphis exists to nurture this unique character and to magnify the city’s creative voice. We are a 45-year-old arts funding organization (the sixth largest in the United States), which provides annual operating and project support to 23 arts groups and administers some 150 additional grants on a year to year basis. The ArtsMemphis tagline is “your support matters” and indeed it does. As major fundraisers, grant-makers and arts promoters in the city, ArtsMemphis contributed more than $4 million to the Memphis arts community in 2007, and it is a fact that 95 cents of every dollar raised in our annual campaign is directed to our funded organizations. ArtsMemphis builds partnerships among artists, arts groups, donors, educators and culture lovers throughout the city and region. Recognizing that a lively arts scene has a major economic impact and is essential to the quality of life in Memphis, ArtsMemphis is encouraging the entire community to interact with the arts like never before. The current enhanced website with its expanded calendar of events has been introduced with that goal in mind.
