    Macbeth Symposium

    Rhodes College

    January 25, 2008

    Add Review/Comment

On January 25, 2008, Rhodes College will host a symposium on "Macbeth" in conjunction with local Memphis productions of Shakespeare's play by Hattiloo Theatre and Verdi's opera by Opera Memphis. "Shakespeare in Color: A Symposium on African-American Performances and Appropriations of 'Macbeth'" will draw together national scholars as well as local artists in a conversation about so-called 'non-traditional' casting of Shakespeare's plays. Invited speakers include: Ayanna Thompson (Arizona State University), Peter Erickson (Williams College), Amy Scott-Douglass (Denison University), Marguerite Rippy (Marymount University), and opera scholar Wallace Cheatham. Also, we have two new speakers to add to the line-up (following Wallace Cheatham): film director Aleta Chappelle, and veteran Hollywood and Broadway actor Harry J. Lennix. There will also be roundtable discussions with performers and directors from the Opera Memphis and Hattiloo productions. This all-day event will present an opportunity to revisit the historical, theoretical, and practical implications of 'colorblind' casting in anticipation of attending these productions. All lectures and discussions will take place in Blount Auditorium, Buckman Hall; the event is free and open to the public. Please contact Scott Newstok (newstoks@rhodes.edu) for further information. This symposium is sponsored by the Rhodes College Center for Outreach in the Development in the Arts (CODA). Further details about the symposium will be posted on the Rhodes website as they become available: http://cal.rhodes.edu/cal_event.php?id=125997

Although very little is left of the original play, this adaptation is extremely well done. There is rather a lot of shouting, but the funny parts are hilarious, the serious parts are absorbing and thoughtful, and the music is wonderful. I don't know that I agree with the writer/director's conclusion that his play is really about the fulfillment of human potential, but I'm not sure it matters -- there's a real banquet in this play, when it comes to food for thought.
