This landmark exhibition features the work of some of the most important American artists of the mid-nineteenth century, including Winslow Homer, Eastman Johnson, Sanford Robinson Gifford, and John Frederick Kensett. Their works reveal changing ideas and attitudes, major shifts that Walt Whitman's poetry and prose anticipated and that the Civil War hurried into effect.
