    Memphis Raqs is a bellydance company that specializes in tribal fusion bellydance. We are the only tribal fusion bellydance company in Memphis, Tennessee!


    The word raqs (pronounced rocks) is an Arabic term that roughly translates to dance. The traditional term for the dance Americans have come to known as "bellydance" is Raqs Sharqi, which means Dance of the East.


    Memphis Raqs combines elements of traditional Middle Eastern, North African, and Asian dance with a modern, urban American flair.


    Our technique classes focus on laying down a solid foundation of basic bellydance technique, including muscular control and isolation, as well as movements and combinations commonly used in tribal style group improvisational dancing.


    Technique classes are taught inside the Desert Rose Dance studio in First Congo Church at 1000 S. Cooper in the historic Cooper-Young District. Most sessions run for 8 weeks, and continue progressively, building a vocabulary of technique and movements over time.

Recognizing that a lively arts scene has a major economic impact and is essential to the quality of life in Memphis, ArtsMemphis is encouraging the entire community to interact with the arts like never before. The current enhanced website with its expanded calendar of events has been introduced with that goal in mind.
