Rants & Raves - A Review of 5 Lesbians Eating A Quiche

Posted by Glenda Mace on July 18th, 2013

It's 1956 and at TheatreWorks the widows are gathered for the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein annual quiche breakfast. 1956 was almost 50 years ago. Dwight D. Eisenhower was President and Richard Nixon was vice President. Elvis had his first chart hit “Heartbreak Hotel.” Damn Yankees won a Tony for best musical. Crinolines were in fashion. Anyone remember crinolines? They were just a little more manageable than the hoop skirt. The Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling that segregation on Alabama buses was unconstitutional. The Color Purple opened Friday at Playhouse on the Square, the regional premiere of this 2006, Tony nominated musical. Tony Horne has directed this show with skill and insight and it is definitely destined for local nomination as one of the best musicals of the 2013 Memphis Theatre season. His last play was produced on Broadway and was a significant flop. Myra’s wealth is dwindling. The ... read more »

Rants & Raves - A Review of Miss Saigon

Posted by Glenda Mace on May 17th, 2013

Miss Saigon opened last weekend at Playhouse on the Square. What a beautiful production: beautiful lighting, beautiful music, beautifully costumed, beautifully directed and beautifully told. I saw the touring production at the Orpheum several years ago and somehow missed the love story entirely. The space was too large and there were too many technical fireworks. In the intimate setting, that is Playhouse on the Square, director, Jordan Nichols, has concentrated on the story and highlighted the music. He has cast wonderful actors to tell the tale and beautiful voices to sing it. read more »
