Posted by Glenda Mace on July 18th, 2013

It's 1956 and at TheatreWorks the widows are gathered for the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein annual quiche breakfast. 1956 was almost 50 years ago. Dwight D. Eisenhower was President and Richard Nixon was vice President. Elvis had his first chart hit “Heartbreak Hotel.” Damn Yankees won a Tony for best musical. Crinolines were in fashion. Nekita Kruschev was ... read more »

Rants & Raves - A Review of The Color Purple

Posted by Glenda Mace on June 24th, 2013

The Color Purple opened Friday at Playhouse on the Square, the regional premiere of this 2006, Tony nominated musical. Tony Horne has directed this show with skill and insight and it is definitely destined for local nomination as one of the best musicals of the 2013 Memphis Theatre season. It is a music filled story that covers four decades and two continents, a story of abuse and deprivation that resolves in love and redemption. read more »

Posted by Glenda Mace on June 17th, 2013

Deathtrap, the well-constructed 1972 thriller by Ira Levin opened last weekend at Circuit Playhouse. The atmosphere suggests some wealth, certainly comfortable living. Sydney Bruhl is a renowned writer of Broadway thrillers, but these days he is on the skids. He hasn’t had a hit in years. His last play was produced on Broadway and was a significant flop. Myra’s wealth is dwindling. The ... read more »

Rants & Raves - A Review of Zombies from The Beyond

Posted by Glenda Mace on October 16th, 2012

I saw Zombies From The Beyond at Circuit Playhouse last Friday a week into the run. What fun. It is so satisfying to watch a musical comedy dedicated to improbability and silliness that holds no pretense it is anything else. From set to acting style, director Ann Marie Hall has given us the opportunity to laugh at the politics and pop culture of the 50’s. read more »
